Episode 3 – The Choice on the Broken Bridge (Extended Edition)

Sergeant Park Sung-chul’s question wasn’t fully out of his mouth before Kang Hyuk answered.
A three-dimensional tactical map shimmered faintly in his vision, tracing a green line—the safest and most efficient path, guaranteed by the system.

“If we keep moving south along the valley,” Hyuk said steadily, “we’ll hit a river. Following that downstream will give us the highest chance of encountering friendly forces.”

“…Got it.”

There was no skepticism this time.
Not after everything they had survived.

The strange trio began their march once more—each step heavier than the last.

■ Four Days of Hell

Their journey through the valley was nothing short of torture.

Rocks slid unpredictably under their boots.
The steep terrain punished their legs.
Every rustle of leaves made them freeze in fear, imagining a North Korean patrol emerging from behind a boulder.

Worst of all was hunger.

Their faces had hollowed out in only a few days. Their uniforms were shredded by thorns and sharp rocks. Their breaths grew shallow, almost wheezing. Each night, sleep came only in short snatches, haunted by nightmares of enemy soldiers, artillery bursts, and starvation.

Then, somewhere deep in the valley, they heard it.
The faint trickle of water.

“Sergeant! Water— There’s water here!”

Private Kim’s voice trembled with hope.

But as he rushed toward the stream, Hyuk quickly put a hand in front of him.

“Stop. You can’t drink it like that.”

Sergeant Park sighed irritably.
“Kid, we’re dying out here. This isn’t the time to be picky.”

But Hyuk met his eyes with an intensity that stopped Park cold.

“If you drink unboiled water, you’ll get sick. Diarrhea, fever, dehydration.
If that happens out here, we die. All of us.”

Park’s jaw tightened.
He wanted to protest, to dismiss the student’s warning—but memories of surviving the past few days because of Hyuk tugged at him.

“…Tch. Fine. We’ll boil it.”

Their battered aluminum mess kits were placed over a small fire, their smoke concealed beneath a rocky ledge. The water tasted metallic and bitter after boiling, but it saved them.
None of them knew that the stream was contaminated by a dead mule upstream.
Had they drunk from it directly, all three would’ve been incapacitated within hours.

That night, as they huddled around the dying embers of their fire, Park found himself glancing toward Hyuk more often—not with distrust, but with reluctant admiration.

This kid had saved them again.

A Piece of Chocolate That Changed Everything

On the third evening, their exhaustion reached its peak.

Park couldn’t stop his legs from shaking.
Kim lay motionless, only his shallow breaths proving he was still alive.
Hyuk himself was dizzy with fatigue, the world swaying every time he blinked.

But the system was still quietly accumulating resources.

Hyuk slipped his hand into his pocket, pretending to rummage through it.

[ Purchasing item: “Premium Chocolate Bar.” (Resources -10) ]

A silver-wrapped bar appeared in his palm—warm, solid, real.
He tore off a small piece and held it toward the others.

“What… what’s that?” Park asked suspiciously.

“Chocolate,” Hyuk whispered. “Eat it.”

The two men exchanged dubious looks, then hesitantly bit into the chocolate.

Instantly—

Their eyes widened.

It melted on their tongues, sweetness blooming like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. Warm energy surged through their bodies—a jolt of life they desperately needed.

Private Kim’s eyes filled with tears.

“…My god. This… this is the greatest thing I’ve ever tasted.”

Sergeant Park swallowed slowly, savoring every hint of cocoa.

“Hyuk,” he said quietly.
Not “student.”
Not “kid.”

Just Hyuk—equal to equal.

“No matter what you are… you’ve saved our lives more times than I can count.”

The bond among them shifted that night.
Survival companions became something deeper—
Men tied together by desperation, trust, and shared miracles.

The Broken Bridge

On the fourth day, the valley finally ended.

Beyond the last stretch of rock, a worn wooden bridge came into view.
Half-collapsed by artillery, yet still intact enough to cross—barely.

But what made their blood run cold was what stood on the bridge.

A Soviet-made GAZ military truck sat crookedly with a missing wheel.
Around it lounged five North Korean soldiers, smoking, laughing, kicking loose boards with their boots.

“Down. Everyone down!” Park hissed.

They dove behind a fallen tree trunk.

“Damn it… the path’s blocked,” he muttered. “We’re too exhausted to fight five armed men.”

Kim nodded, defeated.
“With our ammo? With these bodies? No way…”

But Hyuk’s vision flickered.
A blue screen shimmered before him.

A Dangerous Opportunity

[ Opportunity Quest: Cut Off Enemy Supplies ]
< Objective: Eliminate the enemy truck and its guard squad. >
< Difficulty: Hard >
< Reward: +1500 Resources, M2 Browning Heavy Machine Gun Blueprint >

Hyuk’s breath stopped.

M2 Browning.
A weapon that could turn a tiny defensive position into a fortress.
A weapon that could hold off dozens of enemy soldiers.

A weapon that could keep them alive.

He clenched his fists.

This wasn’t optional.

“Sergeant Park,” he whispered, “we need to take them out.”

Park stared at him as though he’d gone insane.

“Hyuk, are you out of your damn mind?! They’re five—five healthy soldiers! We can barely stand!”

Kim added hoarsely, “We have, what? Ten rounds left?”

But Hyuk didn’t look away.

“I’ll do it.”

His voice changed—calm, steady, frighteningly cold.

Park froze.
Kim swallowed.

“You two move up to the ridge,” Hyuk continued.
“When I give the signal, fire at the truck’s tires and the driver’s seat. Draw their attention.”

“And you?” Park demanded.

“I’ll flank them from the riverbed.”

Park stared at him for a long time.

Hyuk’s plan was insane, suicidal even.
And yet… his tone, his confidence… it wasn’t something a helpless teenager could produce.

It was a commander’s voice.

A man who had seen the battlefield’s flow before.

“…Damn it,” Park growled. “Damn it all.”

He squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them with resolve.

“We’ll trust you. One more time.”

The Quiet Footsteps of an Invisible Army

The three split up.

Park and Kim crawled up the ridge, rifles ready.

Hyuk slid down toward the riverbank, hiding behind reeds and broken stones.
He could hear the enemy talking on the bridge now—casual, bored, unaware of their approaching fate.

And then—

Hyuk summoned the menu.

His fingers brushed the interface.

[ Adding 4 × M1 Garand Infantry Units to Summon Queue ]
[ Resources -400 ]

A faint blue ripple spread behind him.

Moments later:

Boots pressed into the earth.
Metal clicked as rifles were readied.
Four soldiers materialized with disciplined silence.

Invisible to everyone else.

But not to him.

His army.
His secret weapon.

And tonight, they would fight for the first time.

Hyuk raised his hand slowly.

The signal was coming.

It was time to change the course of the battle.

And maybe…
the course of the entire war.
